When Emily first arrived in Buhehe Parish, Buhehe Sub County, Busia District, Eastern Uganda, she carried with her not just the title of American Peace Corps Volunteer and Country Director, but also a deep conviction that change begins with listening. She didn’t come with ready-made solutions; instead, she walked the dusty roads, sat under mango trees with elders, and listened to the voices of the vulnerable communities who had long felt unseen.
Building Trust and Hope
Emily quickly became more than a visitor she became part of the community. She worked hand in hand with local leaders, youth groups, and women’s associations, ensuring that every initiative reflected the real needs of Buhehe Parish. Her humility and openness built trust, and soon, families began to see her not as an outsider, but as a sister committed to their well-being.
