In a bid to empower and uplift the local community, Bilp Initiative Uganda organized a mega sports tournament on January 7th and 8th, 2025, in Busia District, Eastern Uganda. The event, hosted at Buhehe Primary School, brought together hundreds of participants and spectators for an exciting two-day celebration of sportsmanship, talent discovery, and community unity.
The tournament aimed to identify and nurture untapped potential among the youth in the district. Participants competed in various sports disciplines, including football, netball, and cycling, showcasing remarkable skill and determination.
Addressing the media after the tournament, Mr. David Olumbe Sidonyi, the Program Officer for Bilp Initiative Uganda, emphasized the purpose of the annual youth tournament. “This event is not only about competition; it is a platform for identifying and nurturing talent in our local communities, especially among the youth. Our broader mission is to support vulnerable individuals and foster sustainable community development,” he said.
Mr. Sidonyi also called upon the local community, particularly tournament organizers, to prioritize the original goal of youth tournaments promoting and developing talent over mere entertainment. He highlighted the importance of creating opportunities for the youth to thrive in sports and beyond.
Adding to this vision, Coach Benard Bwire, one of the leading sports mentors at the event, assured participants and the community of ongoing efforts to connect talented youth from Busia to reputable football teams and other professional sports opportunities. “We are committed to ensuring that our young people get the recognition and support they need to grow and excel in their chosen sports careers,” said Coach Bwire.
The tournament received widespread praise for its organization and impact. Spectators were treated to thrilling matches and races that reflected the vibrancy of the local talent pool. The event also served as a reminder of the power of sports in uniting communities and creating a positive change ..
